NASA’s InSight lander has revealed vast quantities of liquid water buried six to 12 miles beneath the surface of Mars. Researchers believe this could support microbial life and potentially Martian sea creatures. The discovery was made by analyzing seismic data collected by the lander between 2018 and 2022.
According to Hiroshima University researcher Ikuo Katayama, “many studies suggest the presence of water on ancient Mars billions of years ago,” but his model indicates liquid water is still present today. The data shows oceans of water filling cracks and hollows in porous rock at these depths.
While current technology cannot reach the water or potential life, experts are working on solutions. SpaceX billionaire Elon Musk plans to send robot asteroids to explore Mars next year, followed by human missions as early as 2029. His plan involves the Optimus cyborg robot, designed to perform everyday tasks, which could potentially aid in exploring and studying the Martian subsurface.
