Colon Cancer Awareness: Early Screening Saves Lives

TOPEKA, Kan. – Despite the cold temperatures, a large crowd gathered for the Walk with a Doc event, where Dr. Robert Ricci shared the importance of colon cancer screenings.

March marks Colon Cancer Awareness Month, and Dr. Ricci emphasized that early screening can prevent the disease from progressing further. Colorectal cancer is the second deadliest cancer in the US, but it’s highly treatable when caught early.

Symptoms may not appear until the disease has advanced, making regular screenings crucial. According to Dr. Ricci, changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, or weight loss can indicate a more advanced malignancy.

The event was part of a partnership between Stormont Vail Digestive Health Center and Midwest Transplant. The next Walk with a Doc will take place on April 26, focusing on organ donations.
