USPS Turns to Elon Musk’s DOGE for Cost-Cutting Help Amid Plans for 10,000 Jobs Cut

The United States Postal Service (USPS) is seeking help from Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to cut costs and reform the agency. According to a letter sent by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to Congress, he plans to reduce 10,000 workers and billions of dollars from the budget.

DeJoy has announced his plan to step down at an undisclosed date and has signed an agreement with DOGE to help achieve efficiency and cost goals. He cited legislation as a major obstacle to progress under his Delivering for America plan.

DOGE’s role in the plan includes reviewing areas such as retail leases, counterfeit postage, federal laws, and regulations. DeJoy noted that unfunded congressional mandates imposed by legislation cost the USPS between $6 billion and $11 billion annually.

However, not everyone is on board with DeJoy’s plans. Kevin Yoder, executive director of Keep US Posted, has called for DeJoy’s firing and expressed concerns about potential rate increases. Democratic lawmakers have also demanded a hearing to increase transparency on DOGE’s plan for USPS.

As the Trump administration implements budget cuts across various areas, some GOP lawmakers are working behind the scenes to limit the impact on their constituents. The moves come as President Trump considers a “merger” of the Commerce Department and the USPS to prevent financial losses.
