Southwest Airlines Introduces New Fare Categories and Fees

Southwest Airlines is reimagining its fare structure and customer perks, starting with a new “Basic” category on May 28. The airline will also introduce new fees, limit flexibility for changes and standby options, and cap the use of flight credits.

In a significant shift from its traditional model, Southwest will implement assigned seating by 2025, ending its open-seating policy. This change marks a departure from the airline’s customer-friendly approach to pricing and service.

CEO Bob Jordan has confirmed that A-List Preferred elite members can choose any seat, including extra-legroom options, for free when booking, at least 48 hours in advance. The changes signal a new era for Southwest, with a focus on structured pricing and seating systems, which may be less familiar to travelers.

The airline’s decision to eliminate its two free checked bags policy has also sparked controversy, with many customers expressing concerns about the impact on their travel plans. As Southwest continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how these changes will affect customer loyalty and satisfaction.
