Thousands gathered in Tel Aviv on Tuesday to protest against the potential dismissal of Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) chief Ronen Bar and demand the release of hostages held in Gaza captivity. The protest was planned after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced his intention to remove Bar.
Major protest organizations, including Hofshi B’Artzenu (Free in Our Land), called for a mass demonstration against the firing. Protest leaders discussed the decision among themselves before making the announcement.
The protests aim to express opposition to what protesters see as a “regime” under threat from Netanyahu’s move. The protesters believe that Bar’s dismissal could lead to Israel’s complete destruction and are calling on the government to reconsider.
Attorney-General Gali Baharav-Miara has responded to the protest by stating that firing Bar would require his approval from the Advisory Committee on Senior Appointments.
