Tesla has been kicked out of the Vancouver International Auto Show due to security concerns, according to the event’s executive director Eric Nicholl. The auto show had initially included Tesla as a featured manufacturer, but removed its logo from the website by afternoon on Tuesday.
The decision comes amid controversy surrounding Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO and owner, over his comments on Canadian sovereignty and his role as an adviser to US President Donald Trump. Some British Columbians have taken issue with Musk’s views, which they believe are anti-Canadian.
Protests have taken place in Vancouver and across North America and Europe in response to the policies of the Trump administration and Musk’s actions. The New Car Dealers Association of B.C. had also faced criticism for including Tesla in the event.
The auto show will still feature 200 vehicles from other manufacturers, including Cadillac, Ford, Hyundai, Chevrolet, Toyota, and Kia. Last year’s event drew over 130,000 attendees, with organizers expecting a similar turnout this year.
Tesla did not respond to a request for comment on its removal from the event. The decision has been met with praise from some, who believe it was necessary to prioritize attendee safety.
