Air Force Officer Completes Historic NASA Space Mission

Air Force Maj. Nichole Ayers has successfully completed her next mission: space. As part of NASA’s SpaceX Crew-10 mission, she piloted the Dragon spacecraft into orbit alongside Army Col. Anne McClain and international crew members Takuya Onishi from Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and Russian cosmonaut Kirill Peskov.

On March 15, 2025, after a 28.5-hour journey at 17,000 mph, the spacecraft autonomously docked to the International Space Station (ISS). Ayers has flown numerous combat missions and gathered over 1,400 flight hours in various aircraft, but this marks her first spaceflight.

Ayers attributes her readiness for this mission to her extensive military training. She says that learning to make quick decisions under pressure and working effectively as a team have been invaluable skills throughout her career. The Air Force has instilled in her the importance of teamwork and taking care of teammates, lessons she believes will be crucial during her time aboard the ISS.

Ayers’ passion for space exploration began at a young age, inspired by the shuttle program and her desire to fly and explore space. Representing the Air Force as NASA astronaut is an honor for her, and she cherishes the opportunity to embody those values on this historic mission.

As Ayers embarks on this new chapter, she emphasizes the importance of teamwork, hard work, and being a good human being. “If you are a good team player and willing to work hard, you’ll get anywhere in life,” she says. With her extensive experience, skills, and dedication, Ayers is poised to make a meaningful impact on this mission and beyond.
