Frontier Airlines Offers Free Checked Bags in Response to Southwest’s Policy Change

Southwest Airlines is ending its popular “two bags fly free” policy on May 28, but Frontier Airlines has already capitalized on the change by announcing a similar offer for its own customers. As of March 18, all nonstop flights departing between that date and August 18 will receive a free carry-on bag, seat selection, and flight changes.

However, Southwest’s loyal customers won’t be able to take advantage of this deal. Only elite status or co-branded credit card holders will get a free checked bag, while standard customers must pay for both checked and carry-on bags. Frontier aims to lure these customers away from the struggling airline with its offer.

“We’ve always had heart,” said Frontier CEO Barry Biffle in a press release. “Some airlines are walking away from what travelers love, but we’re running towards it.” The temporary deal is set to run until August 18, and if enough people take advantage of it, Frontier may make the free bags permanent.

Southwest is trying to cut costs and boost revenue by ending its iconic policy, citing cheaper tickets as a major selling point. However, loyal flyers have criticized the move, saying it’s a money grab.

The situation highlights Southwest’s struggles with customer loyalty and competition from rival airlines like American Airlines, Delta, and United. Aviation experts say that Southwest’s customers are now more open to flying other carriers, which could pose a significant challenge for the airline.

As Frontier continues to revamp its services to offer more premium perks, it may be able to capitalize on Southwest’s missteps and attract some of its loyal customer base.
