Cincinnati Bengals star wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins have signed massive four-year contract extensions worth $161 million and $115 million, respectively. The deals make both players among the top 10 highest-paid wide receivers in NFL history.
According to NFL agent Rocky Arceneaux of Alliance Sports, negotiations for both contracts were complex but ultimately led to mutually beneficial agreements. Arceneaux revealed that he initially doubted the possibility of signing both players to new contracts with the Bengals, citing concerns about franchise tags and trade implications.
However, after the 2023 NFL Combine, Arceneaux reassessed the situation, realizing the Bengals’ willingness to reward their stars rather than trading them. This shift in approach allowed him to work towards securing lucrative deals for both Chase and Higgins.
The negotiations were aided by increased salary cap space due to last year’s season, which saw Ja’Marr Chase have an “unbelievable” campaign. Arceneaux credited a combination of factors, including the timing and the value of analytics provided by his team, in helping him secure top-dollar deals for both players.
Guarantees were crucial in the negotiations, as they are not typically part of Bengals’ contracts. The addition of two years fully guaranteed to each deal addressed concerns about player stability and security.
With these historic extensions, Chase and Higgins will enjoy average annual salaries of $40.2 million and $28.7 million, respectively, cementing their status among the league’s top wide receivers.
