EU Eyes Doubling Ukraine Aid to 40 Billion Euros

The European Union is considering doubling its military aid to Ukraine to 40 billion euros ($43 billion) this year, according to a discussion paper by the bloc’s diplomatic service. The proposal, seen by Reuters, also suggests that each EU country should contribute “in line with its economic weight” to the effort.

In light of uncertain US backing for Ukraine, EU countries have expressed willingness to continue supporting the country in the war triggered by Russia’s 2022 invasion. However, some states oppose fixed targets. The European External Action Service (EEAS) has suggested leaders agree to provide 2 million rounds of large-calibre artillery ammunition to Kyiv this year.

Hungary’s prime minister Viktor Orban has criticized EU sanctions on Russia and military assistance to Ukraine, but his country may still contribute funds to a common EU defence policy. The contents of the new proposal were previously reported by Politico.

The proposal comes amid concerns about the future of US backing for Ukraine, which has been a key player in supporting the country since Russia’s invasion last year. The EU is seeking to maintain its support and has proposed increasing its aid to 40 billion euros this year, up from around 20 billion euros provided last year.
