A weekend military attack by the US on Houthis rebels in Yemen has left 53 people dead, sending shockwaves through Hamtramck’s large Yemeni community. Many residents feel betrayed by President Trump’s actions, who they had supported during his election.
Akil Al-halemi, a local resident born in Yemen and with hundreds of thousands of social media followers, weighed in on the conflict. He explained that the Houthis have been attacking American ships in the Red Sea, leading to retaliatory airstrikes by the US against their allies in Iran.
Alhalemi expressed concern that the civilians in Yemen are bearing the brunt of the violence, while the Houthis are not being targeted as much as they should be. He urged understanding and empathy for both sides involved, emphasizing that the Yemeni community is caught between two opposing forces.
As a result, many Hamtramck residents who supported Trump’s candidacy are now feeling uneasy about their identity and potentially facing repercussions if they return to Yemen as supporters of the US government.
