Hollywood-produced “Freaky Tales” Brings Oakland to the Big Screen

A new Hollywood-produced movie, “Freaky Tales,” has put Oakland on the big screen. The film’s star-studded cast, including Too $hort, Pedro Pascal, and Angus Cloud, walked the red carpet at a special screening in Oakland.

The movie is described as a love letter to the East Bay city and a celebration of its culture. Ryan Fleck, co-writer and co-director of the film, is an East Bay native who drew inspiration from his childhood memories. The film was shot primarily in Oakland with a diverse cast.

Set in 1987, “Freaky Tales” weaves together stories of characters, including one based on former Golden State Warriors star Sleepy Floyd. Floyd, a North Carolina native, credits Oakland as the place where he learned to become a man and live on his own.

The film’s ensemble cast includes actors who have a personal connection to Oakland. Pedro Pascal said filming in Oakland was nostalgic for him, while actress Dominique Thorne highlighted the city’s history of activism and the Black Panther movement.

A large crowd gathered outside the Grand Lake Theater to catch a glimpse of the celebrities. The movie will be shown in theaters nationwide starting on April 4.
