Cyclones Take Aim at Mustangs Over College Football Rankings

Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard has fired back at Southern Methodist University’s Rick Hart over the latest College Football Playoff rankings, with both officials engaging in a social media spat.

The Spartans are currently ranked 16th and will compete for the Big 12 title, but Pollard expressed frustration that SMU was placed at No. 8 despite their lack of wins against top ACC teams like Clemson, Syracuse, and Georgia Tech.

Hart shot back, defending SMU’s non-conference schedule and noting that the Mustangs have trailed for only six minutes over their last nine games.

The two officials agree to disagree, with Pollard offering a truce if SMU beats No. 17 Clemson on Saturday. However, the outcome of the game will determine the Spartans’ path forward in the College Football Playoff selection process.

SMU’s fate is uncertain, but a win would potentially put them against Alabama in the selection committee’s consideration for the CFP.
