Missouri E. coli Outbreak Linked to Local Caterer

A recent investigation into a St. Louis County outbreak of E. coli has found nearly 25% of the confirmed cases linked to local caterer André’s Banquets and Catering, while similar genetic profiles have been detected in six other states. As of Tuesday, Dec. 3, the county health department reported 115 cases and 13 hospitalizations, with two people still hospitalized. The outbreak is believed to be linked to leafy greens served at off-campus events hosted by the caterer. Genetic testing has also found matches in Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, North Dakota, Ohio, and South Dakota. Multiple lawsuits have been filed against André’s, which claims some students were ill before attending the catered events. Health officials are working to determine why the outbreak produced more cases than other states experienced.

A spokesperson for André’s said the discovery of similar genetic material in E. coli cases outside of Missouri should clear them of suspicion. The Rockwood School District released a statement saying they have worked closely with health officials and provided lists of students, staff, and guests who attended affected events to help with the investigation.
