A Los Angeles court has dismissed a copyright lawsuit filed by country singer Andy Stone against Mariah Carey over her hit song “All I Want for Christmas Is You”. The lawsuit claimed that Carey copied Stone’s 1989 song of the same name, but the judge ruled that there was insufficient evidence to prove copyright infringement.
Carey originally released her version in 1994 and it has since become a chart-topper during the holiday season, certified diamond by the RIAA with over 10 million copies sold and streamed over two billion times on Spotify. A musicologist’s analysis found that while there are lyrical similarities between both songs, they differ significantly in melody, harmony, rhythm, and lyrics, making them not infringing on copyright.
