Shane Beamer, Gamecocks head coach, recently defended his team’s College Football Playoff bid against criticism from other coaches. The regular season has concluded, and the College Football Playoff committee will reveal its rankings next Sunday.
Beamer was responding to comments from Miami head coach Mario Cristobal, who stated that teams with more wins are better suited for the playoffs. However, Beamer disagreed, saying “winning is hard” and that it’s equally challenging to win in the SEC conference.
Cristobal mentioned that his team has won 10 games, but Beamer pointed out that winning nine games is also extremely difficult, especially in the SEC. He acknowledged that Alabama, Ole Miss, and South Carolina are strong teams with 9-3 records, including a head-to-head advantage over the Gamecocks.
For Beamer, it’s about the “eye-test” when evaluating which teams meet the Playoff’s criteria of determining the 12 best teams in college football. He believes that South Carolina is among those teams and can confidently argue that they belong in the playoffs.
The College Football Playoff committee will likely have a tough decision, but Beamer remains confident that his team deserves to be considered among the best.
