Harvey Weinstein, 72, has been taken back to Bellevue Hospital after receiving an “alarming” blood test result. His attorney, Imran Ansari, stated that Weinstein requires emergency treatment and will remain at the hospital until his condition stabilizes.
Weinstein is awaiting a retrial on rape charges next year in New York, held at Rikers Island while being treated for leukemia, diabetes, and other medical conditions. Last week, Ansari filed a $5 million claim against New York City, alleging deplorable conditions at Rikers Island led to Weinstein’s health worsening dramatically.
A federal judge recently threatened to appoint a receiver to oversee Rikers Island due to high levels of violence and poor training among staff. Ansari has previously described the facility as “a gulag where prisoners are treated like animals,” citing instances of unhygienic conditions, inadequate medical care, and medication deprivation.
Weinstein was previously at the Mohawk Correctional Facility before being transferred back to New York City to await a retrial. He is next due in court on January 29.
