You Can Take a Selfie from Space with This New Satellite Launch

A new satellite launch is giving everyday people the chance to take a selfie from space, courtesy of former NASA engineer Mark Rober. The satellite, which will be launched by SpaceX in January 2025, features a Google Pixel smartphone and a camera designed to withstand space’s harsh environment.

When you visit spaceselfie.com and enter a code, your selfie will be displayed on the phone, and then taken as an HDR picture using the camera, before being beamed back to Earth. The satellite has two identical phones and cameras to ensure reliability, but this requires it to rotate regularly to maintain energy efficiency.

Subscribers to CrunchLabs, a service offering engineering-build kits for kids, get free codes for $25 annually. Others will need to pay for a subscription, starting at $25 per year. Redemptions begin on December 3, and photos will take several months to arrive.
