A confirmed case of measles has been reported at John Hanson Montessori School in Oxon Hill, Prince George’s County, Maryland. The individual who tested positive is being kept private due to privacy laws.
This outbreak comes amid two recent cases in Maryland, which were contracted after a trip overseas. To prevent further spread, the county health department and schools are working together.
If you believe you may have been exposed, there are steps you can take. Emily Smith, an epidemiologist, advises checking dates and times of potential exposure. Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) treatment can be obtained to prevent measles infection.
Residents can check their contact dates with the Maryland Department of Health to determine if they need PEP treatment. Taking these precautions will help mitigate the spread of the disease.
