Global Health Alert Issued Over Deadly Viruses Marburg, Mpox and Oropouch

A warning has been issued to travelers over the spread of three deadly diseases, including the Marburg virus. This rare but severe hemorrhagic fever is spreading in multiple countries, according to various health organizations.

The first symptoms of Marburg include fever, chills, headaches, a rash with flat and raised bumps, and sore throat. The virus damages blood vessels, causing bleeding from the eyes, nose, mouth, or vagina.

There have been 66 illnesses and 15 deaths in Rwanda, but many more may be infected. The risk of infection with this virus in the US is low. Marburg spreads through contact with Egyptian rousette bats or by contact with infected individuals.

Mpox, another deadly virus, has spread to Africa, Canada, Europe, and now California. There have been over 21,000 confirmed cases of Mpox since January, mostly transmitted by close contact with infected individuals or contaminated objects.

Oropouch, also known as “sloth fever,” is spread by midges and mosquitoes, and most people recover within a month. However, 1 in 20 may develop a more serious disease, including meningitis, encephalitis, and bleeding.

Travelers are advised to take precautions when traveling to affected areas, especially those at risk of Marburg or Mpox infections.
