South Korea PM Han Reinstated as Acting Leader After Court Ruling

South Korea’s Constitutional Court has reinstated Prime Minister Han Duck-soo as the country’s acting leader, dismissing his impeachment and allowing him to return to power. Han took over as acting president last December after President Yoon Suk Yeol was suspended from duties and impeached by parliament due to an attempt to declare martial law.

However, Han’s tenure lasted only two weeks before lawmakers voted to impeach him as well. Since then, Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok has led the country.

The court’s ruling comes amid ongoing political chaos in South Korea, sparked by Yoon’s botched attempt to impose martial law. As acting president, Han blocked the appointment of new judges to the constitutional court, which the opposition had hoped would improve Yoon’s chances of being impeached.

Despite his reinstatement, Han has vowed to work towards restoring order in the government. The ruling also leaves the future of President Yoon uncertain, as his impeachment is still pending before the Constitutional Court. If the court overturns the impeachment, Yoon will be returned to his duties immediately.
