Denmark’s defense committee chairman, Rasmus Jarlov, has expressed regret over choosing the F-35 fighter jet for his country, citing fears that the US may use it as leverage against Denmark. Jarlov warned that if the US stops supplying spare parts to Copenhagen, the city could be left vulnerable to attack.
The comments come amid growing tensions between the US and its allies, with President Donald Trump recently saying he wants to buy or annex Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark rich in minerals. However, leaders in both Greenland and Denmark have repeatedly rejected these claims.
Jarlov fears that the US may use the F-35 as a tool to threaten Denmark, particularly over the issue of Greenland. He believes that the country cannot take the US’s word on its capabilities and is instead opting for alternative air defense systems.
Denmark is not alone in this decision, with leaders in Portugal and Canada also reviewing their reliance on US exports amid the current geopolitical tensions. The F-35 is one of the most advanced fighter jets in the world, but other countries are seeking alternatives due to concerns over US hostility.
