Drinking sweetened carbonated beverages has been linked to a 22% increased risk of stroke, according to a recent study that collected data from almost 27,000 individuals worldwide.
The study found that those who drank fizzy drinks regularly had a higher risk of stroke, even if they were artificially sweetened. This is because these drinks often contain added sugars, caffeine, and artificial sweeteners that can contribute to weight gain, high blood pressure, and other conditions that increase the risk of stroke.
Health experts recommend opting for sugar-free, naturally flavored beverages like water, herbal tea, or unsweetened fruit juice instead of fizzy drinks. The American Heart Association suggests that adults consume no more than 100 calories from added sugars per day, which is equivalent to about 25 grams.
In addition to choosing healthier beverages, other lifestyle factors can also help reduce the risk of stroke. These include eating a balanced diet rich in whole foods, reaching for potassium-rich foods like bananas and leafy greens, moving more throughout the day, quitting smoking, limiting or avoiding alcohol, and staying hydrated with plain water.
While enjoying an occasional fizzy drink is unlikely to make or break your vascular health, it’s essential to prioritize your overall health and make informed choices about what you consume.
