California Attorney General Rob Bonta has issued a warning to customers of 23andMe, a genetic testing company based in Oakland, due to its financial distress and reported inability to continue as a going concern. To address concerns about consumer data privacy, Bonta is reminding Californians of their right to delete their genetic data under the Genetic Information Privacy Act (GIPA) and California Consumer Protection Act (CCPA).
California consumers can take steps to protect their genetic information by deleting their account and having their biological sample destroyed through 23andMe’s website. Additionally, they can revoke consent for researchers to use their genetic data.
Under GIPA, Californians can delete their account and have their biological samples destroyed. The CCPA also gives consumers the right to delete personal information, including genetic data, from businesses that collect it.
