South Korea’s Judiciary Set for High-Profile Rulings Amid Impeachment Crisis

South Korea’s Constitutional Court is poised to deliver rulings on at least two high-profile cases this week, which could reshape the nation’s political landscape.

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo faces impeachment over allegations of rebellion and refusing to appoint Constitutional Court justices. The National Assembly voted 192-0 in favor of his impeachment, but the question remains whether it was legally justified given that fewer than 200 votes are required to impeach a president.

The court’s verdict on Han could also affect the legitimacy of appointments made by his successor, Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok. If Han is reinstated, questions may arise over these appointments.

In another case, Rep. Lee Jae-myung, chief of the Democratic Party of Korea, will face a crucial ruling from the Seoul High Court on Wednesday. He was previously found guilty of violating election laws and could lose his Assembly seat if upheld by the appellate court.
