Plastic Apple Watch SE Design in Jeopardy Due to Cost and Aesthetics Issues

Apple’s plans for a redesigned Apple Watch SE with a plastic casing are facing challenges due to design and cost issues, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The budget-friendly smartwatch was expected to feature a plastic version with brighter colors at a lower price point of around $200.

In August 2024, Gurman reported that Apple was revamping the Apple Watch SE by replacing its aluminum casing with plastic. The change was expected to make the watch more affordable for buyers and appeal to younger users, particularly as part of Apple’s marketing strategy targeting parents and kids.

However, design team dissatisfaction and operations team struggles to cut costs have cast doubt on the project’s future. The plastic aesthetic has been deemed unsatisfactory by the design team, while efforts to reduce material costs have proven difficult.

The updated watch is typically released alongside new iPhones in September. For the latest updates, download the iClarified app or follow iClarified on social media platforms.
