Ohio State Women’s Hockey Falls Short in Overtime Thriller

Ohio State women’s hockey lost to Wisconsin in heartbreaking fashion, falling short of claiming its second straight NCAA championship and third national title in four years. The Buckeyes led the Badgers 3-2 late in the third period but ultimately succumbed to a penalty shot with 18 seconds remaining.

The game saw several memorable moments, including Joy Dunne’s coast-to-coast goal for Ohio State and Laila Edwards’ response, which tied the game at 1-1. Sloane Matthews later put the Buckeyes up 2-1, but Wisconsin forward Kirsten Simms scored a well-executed penalty shot to tie it up just before the end of regulation.

In overtime, Simms capitalized on a rebound off Ohio State goaltender Amanda Thiele’s pad and scored the winning goal, securing the Badgers’ first Frozen Four title since 2017. The Buckeyes and Badgers have been championship opponents in each of the past three seasons, with Wisconsin emerging victorious this time around.

Ohio State forward Jordyn Petrie was sent to the box for a cross-checking penalty early in the game, but her teammate Joy Dunne provided a crucial goal for the Buckeyes. However, Wisconsin’s Laila Edwards responded with her 35th goal of the season, knotting the score at 1-1.

The game remained close throughout, with both teams trading chances and neither able to gain a clear advantage. In the end, it was Simms’ clutch penalty shot that sealed the win for Wisconsin, bringing home the Badgers’ first Frozen Four title since 2017.
