Alabama football team is currently ranked No. 11 in the College Football Playoff selection committee’s penultimate rankings, just ahead of Miami. The Crimson Tide lost three games under first-year coach Kalen DeBoer, but still has a strong record against top-ranked teams and opponents with winning records.
The Hurricanes, meanwhile, fell six spots to No. 12 after losing two of their last three games. Miami’s loss to Syracuse on Saturday has made it difficult for the team to jump Alabama in the final rankings. The selection committee will release the updated rankings on Sunday, but DeBoer said Alabama believes they are one of the 12 best teams.
Oregon remains No. 1, followed by Texas, Penn State, Notre Dame, and Georgia. Ohio State fell four spots after a loss to Michigan, while Tennessee, SMU, Indiana, and Boise State round out the top 10.
The top four conference champions that would receive first-round byes in the 12-team playoff are currently Oregon, Texas, SMU, and Boise State. The selection committee will evaluate the outcome of these championship games to determine final rankings.
Clemson’s ACC championship game against SMU on Saturday could impact Alabama’s playoff chances if they secure the automatic bid. Meanwhile, Miami’s coach Mario Cristobal is urging the conference commissioner to reconsider the team’s current ranking.
