Lindsey Vonn Sets Record with Podium Finish at 40

Lindsey Vonn closed her comeback season with a second-place finish in a World Cup super-G race, marking a major milestone for the 40-year-old American skier. The victory marks Vonn’s first podium spot since March 2018 and cements her status as the oldest female Alpine ski racer to reach the podium of a World Cup race.

Vonn’s remarkable comeback was fueled by her determination to prove that anything is possible, despite facing numerous challenges both physically and mentally. She credited her persistence and hard work for helping her achieve this milestone, saying it takes “one foot in front of the other and getting through the hard days” to succeed.

Vonn now stands at 138 World Cup podiums, just one start away from tying Renate Goetschl’s record for most starts by a female skier. Her closest rival, Lara Gut-Behrami, edged her out by 1.29 seconds, but earned the season-long super-G crystal globe.

Gut-Behrami attributed her success to finding happiness on the slopes two days prior to the race, saying it made skiing faster and more enjoyable. The final season-long super-G standings are now Lara Gut-Behrami, Federica Brignone, and Sofia Goggia of Italy.
