Netflix has introduced support for the HDR10+ high dynamic range video format, enhancing picture quality for millions of its subscribers worldwide. The new feature is available on compatible devices and accounts on the premium tier.
Previously, HDR content was only available in the core HDR10 format or Dolby Vision, which wasn’t supported by all TVs. Netflix partnered with Samsung to develop HDR10+, an open-source alternative to Dolby Vision that’s now widely supported. This means millions of potential subscribers may not have been able to access HDR content due to their TV brand restrictions.
The addition of HDR10+ support addresses this issue and joins other streaming platforms like Apple TV+, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video in offering enhanced picture quality. Netflix has already rolled out HDR10+ support on a range of content, including recent productions and third-party films. The company aims to expand its HDR10+ offerings to all eligible titles by the end of 2024.
To access HDR10+ streams, users need an HDR10+ and AV1-capable TV or device and a Netflix Premium plan subscription. However, existing Dolby Vision support will continue, and devices capable of playing both formats may default to Dolby Vision instead.
