A 14-year-old son of former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner has died under investigation, authorities in Costa Rica said. Miller Gardner was found dead in his hotel room on Friday morning with no air passages obstructed and traces of vomit.
The Quepos and Parrita office of Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Department is investigating the cause of death, which authorities initially thought might be related to asphyxiation. However, they have ruled out this possibility.
Brett Gardner and his wife, Jessica, announced their son’s death in a statement on Sunday, saying he had fallen ill along with several family members while on vacation. The cause of Miller’s illness remains unclear, but investigators believe the food at a restaurant may have contributed to his condition.
A study is being conducted by Costa Rican Institute for Research and Teaching in Nutrition and Health (INCIENSA) to help determine the cause of death. An autopsy and other analyses will be completed over the next two to three months.
The Yankees organization expressed its grief over Miller’s death, describing him as a “beloved son” who was loved by his family, friends, and the team. The team offered their support to the Gardner family during this difficult time.
