Taiwanese Influencer Voluntarily Leaves After Residency Permit Revoked Over China Comments

A Chinese social media influencer, Yaya in Taiwan, voluntarily left Taiwan yesterday evening after her residence permit was revoked over comments she made about Taiwan being unified with China by military force. The Ministry of the Interior had previously said it could forcibly deport Liu at midnight but decided to take a more flexible approach.

Liu, whose given name is Liu Zhenya, departed on an 8:45pm flight from Taipei International Airport to Fuzhou, China. She held a news conference at the airport earlier in the day, stating her intention to “clear her name” before leaving Taiwan.

The decision to revoke Liu’s permit was made after she commented on Taiwan’s unification with China, sparking concerns that she might promote the use of military force. However, Liu stated that she personally believes in a peaceful unification and did not intend to advocate for violence.

Liu is also concerned about the well-being of her three children, who would face unnecessary harm if she left Taiwan. The US has expressed support for Taiwan’s “status quo” and opposes any changes by force or extortion.

The incident highlights the complexities surrounding Taiwan’s relationships with China and the US. Washington has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Taipei, while Beijing has continued its military pressure campaign against the island nation.
