Gene Hackman’s Death Solved After Months of Mystery

Gene Hackman, the Oscar-winning actor, was found dead outside his New Mexico home in late February along with his wife Betsy Arakawa. Body cam footage released by authorities shows deputies investigating the scene, where they initially suspected a gas leak or carbon monoxide poisoning.

However, further investigation revealed no signs of foul play and eventually led to the discovery that Hackman died from heart disease complicated by Alzheimer’s and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. The rare rodent-borne disease took his wife’s life about a week earlier.

A court granted a temporary restraining order against releasing photographs or video showing the couple’s home, citing privacy concerns. Workers who cared for Hackman and Arakawa’s dogs reported that they were very attached to their pets, with one describing them as “nuts” about their dogs.

In a separate video, Arakawa’s hairdresser said she took her dog everywhere, including inside the salon. The dog was found in a crate near Arakawa’s body and is believed to have died from dehydration and starvation. Hackman’s daughter expressed a desire for the dog to be cremated, and authorities put her in touch with local animal shelters.
