Pope Francis is continuing his recovery at his Vatican residence of Casa Santa Marta, following a 38-day hospitalization in Rome’s Gemelli Hospital due to bilateral pneumonia.
The Pope’s convalescence plan, as described by doctors, includes pharmacological treatment, full-time mobility and respiratory-related physiotherapy, and oxygen administration. He is also concelebrating Mass in the residence’s chapel, similar to what he did during his hospitalization.
According to Doctor Sergio Alfieri, the doctor overseeing the Pope’s hospitalization, Francis’ recovery is being closely monitored, with improvements expected in the coming week. The Holy See Press Office has announced that the Pope will not be receiving visitors at this time and has only seen his closest collaborators.
In an interview, Dr. Alfieri recalled a critical moment when the Pope’s condition worsened due to a bronchospasm crisis, but ultimately chose to fight despite high risks. The doctor also emphasized the importance of transparency, stating that medical updates were conveyed to the Pope’s secretaries and then obtained his approval before being shared with others.
The General Audience will not take place tomorrow, Wednesday, March 26, instead, the prepared text of the Pope’s catechesis will be distributed in written form.
