The number of measles cases in Texas and New Mexico has risen to 370, surpassing last year’s nationwide count of 285 infections, according to state health departments. This is one of the largest outbreaks in the past decade. Most of the new cases were reported in unvaccinated individuals or those with unknown vaccination status.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has stated that the risk for widespread measles remains low, but experts say it will take time to control the outbreak due to resistance to vaccinations. The government is providing resources, including vaccines, to address the situation.
Texas reported 327 cases, with most coming from unvaccinated individuals, while New Mexico reported 43 cases, mostly in Lea County adjacent to Gaines County in Texas. The CDC and infectious disease specialists agree that a high vaccination rate in areas helps mitigate the risk of measles outbreaks.
