The Cherokee Nation has confirmed a case of measles in northeastern Oklahoma, but health officials say there’s no public health risk. The case was investigated by the Cherokee Nation Public Health, Cherokee Nation Health Services, and the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH), who determined it is not contagious.
The Cherokee Nation is urging citizens to check with their primary care provider to ensure they have received all necessary vaccinations, particularly the MMR vaccine, which provides 93-97% protection against measles. The nation recommends that all children and adults be vaccinated against measles.
According to the OSDH, nine unvaccinated individuals in northeastern Oklahoma have been identified with measles. The Cherokee Nation will continue to monitor potential cases and prioritize the health and well-being of its citizens and community partners.
