Norovirus Outbreak Closes Wild Wild West Steampunk Convention

A norovirus outbreak has led to the cancellation of the Wild Wild West Steampunk Convention at Casino Del Sol in Tucson, Arizona. The event was scheduled for March 20-23 but was cut short on Saturday after multiple attendees reported symptoms.

Casino Del Sol confirmed that a private event attendee had reported having norovirus, and by Saturday, additional attendees and staff members were experiencing similar symptoms. To mitigate potential health risks, the casino took immediate action, including deep cleaning of the conference center, hotel rooms, and public restrooms.

Vendors and attendees were given two hours’ notice to leave, which caused some disruptions. However, the casino prioritized health and safety over convenience, citing the need to prevent further spread of the illness. Pascua Yaqui Tribal Medical Authority was involved in the response, and the incident has been managed by the local health department.

The Wild West Steampunk Convention expressed frustration with the lack of information during the weekend but stated that it had not received an official reason for the cancellation until Casino Del Sol’s statement.
