Elon Musk has hinted at a possible exit from his role as a special government employee, amid widespread criticism over the Department of Government Efficiency’s (DOGE) recent cuts.
Musk is currently serving as a special government employee (SGE), which allows him to work temporarily without pay for up to 130 days within a year. The deadline for this temporary role would be May 30, according to his appointment.
In an interview with Fox News, Musk said that the US government’s deficit reduction goals could be achieved within the 130-day timeframe, but provided no clear indication of whether he would continue beyond that period.
Musk’s involvement in DOGE has been a contentious issue, prompting protests and lawsuits. The company’s cuts have also affected Tesla’s performance, with some Americans now viewing it more negatively than positively.
Tesla’s worldwide sales have declined significantly, including an 11% drop in US sales year-over-year. In Germany, the company saw a 76% decline in sales between February 2024 and February 2025. Additionally, SpaceX’s Starlink internet service has faced backlash due to uncertainty about its continued support for Ukraine.
On another front, Musk recently announced that his xAI startup would acquire X in an all-stock transaction, valued at $80 billion and $33 billion respectively, with the combined entity worth $45 billion after debt considerations.
