Google has announced that it will discontinue two of its popular smart home products: the Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide detector and the Nest x Yale smart lock. The company had previously manufactured these devices but has decided to stop production.
The Nest Protect, launched in 2015, is a common fixture in homes, while the Nest x Yale smart lock was introduced in 2018 as part of the Nest Secure home security system. Google will no longer manufacture replacements for these products.
However, customers who need new units can still purchase them on sale from the Google Store. The current prices are $119 for the Nest Protect and $229 for the Nest x Yale smart lock while supplies last.
Google’s decision to discontinue its smart home devices marks a shift in the company’s focus. Since the AI boom began, Google’s attention has shifted towards other areas, such as TV streamers and thermostats. As a result, it is increasingly relying on third-party manufacturers for new smart home products.
