Macron Calls for Israeli Ceasefire in Lebanon After Strikes

French President Emmanuel Macron said that Israel’s recent attacks on Hezbollah in Lebanon were “unjustified” and had breached a ceasefire agreement brokered by France and the US. Macron plans to call US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the situation.

The strikes, which targeted a building in Beirut’s southern suburbs, marked the first substantive attack on Lebanon since a November ceasefire ended a war between Israel and Hezbollah. Macron said that the Lebanese government had not received notice of the attack, which he described as “unilateral” and “without us having either information or proof of the triggering event.”

The November truce required Hezbollah to remove weapons from southern Lebanon, Israeli forces to withdraw, and Lebanon to deploy its national army in the region. However, mutual accusations of violating the truce have been exchanged among Lebanon, Hezbollah, and Israel since then.

Macron has held meetings with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in Paris to discuss economic reforms and efforts to stabilize the country. He aims to help return to a full and complete observance of the ceasefire agreement by calling Trump and Netanyahu in the coming hours and next 48 hours respectively.
