Novak Djokovic departed Indian Wells two weeks ago with serious concerns about his future in tennis. Despite a strong showing in the Australian Open quarter-final against Carlos Alcaraz, his performances have been disappointing for most of 2024. A hamstring injury forced him to withdraw from the semi-finals and another tear at the French Open last year has raised questions about his health.
Djokovic’s struggles continued in Qatar and Indian Wells, where he lost to Botic van de Zandschulp and was dumped out of the Miami tournament after a three-match losing streak. However, the 24-time grand slam champion demonstrated resilience by advancing to the final against 19-year-old Jakub Mensik.
Mensik, who followed up his second-round win over Indian Wells champion Jack Draper with another upset victory over world No.4 Taylor Fritz, has shown a well-rounded game and an untouchable serve that has been a key factor in his success. Djokovic will need to neutralise this threat if he is to add to his legacy.
A victory would make Djokovic the third male player in the Open era to win 100 ATP titles, while also making him the oldest ATP Masters 1000 champion at 37 years and 10 months old. The coaching partnership between Djokovic and Andy Murray has strengthened over time, and a win in Miami would signify a significant breakthrough.
However, Djokovic faces a difficult challenge against Mensik, who will break into the top 30 on Monday if he wins. Djokovic’s determination to overcome his struggles and add to his legacy will be put to the test in the final.
