LOS ANGELES (AP) — The highly-anticipated “Minecraft” movie is set to hit theaters on Friday, starring Jack Black as Steve, the main protagonist, alongside Jason Momoa. Before agreeing to join the project, Black consulted with his sons, avid Minecraft players who enthusiastically encouraged him to take on the role.
The film follows Steve’s journey from being sucked into the Overworld dimension and teaming up with a group of misfits. To prepare for the live-action adaptation, Black immersed himself in the gaming world alongside his sons, spending over 100 hours playing the game while on set.
Minecraft has become a global phenomenon since its release in 2009, selling over 235 million copies across various platforms. The game’s open-ended design allows players to create their own experiences, whether it’s surviving against mobs or crafting artistic masterpieces. Its multiplayer community fosters collaboration and problem-solving skills, making it a favorite among both children and adults.
The success of previous video game adaptations like “Sonic” and “Super Mario Bros.” has proven the genre’s potential at the box office. While some have struggled to gain traction, director Jared Hess believes Minecraft’s unique blend of creativity and exploration makes it an ideal candidate for a film adaptation.
“I think the game forces you to be creative and problem solve in ways that you probably wouldn’t think of,” said actress Emma Myers, who plays Natalie. “It’s very versatile.”
The film’s production team, including creative director Torfi Frans Ólafsson, have also shared their passion for the game, citing its ability to bring people together and create shared memories.
With the movie set to release on Friday, fans of all ages can expect an epic adventure that combines the world of Minecraft with Hollywood magic.
