Pope Francis has approved five people’s paths to sainthood after promulgating decrees by the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Causes of Saints. The newly recognized saints include Peter To Rot from Papua New Guinea, Ignatius Shoukrallah Maloyan from Turkey, and María Carmen from Venezuela.
To Rot, a lay catechist from Papua New Guinea, will be the first saint from his country. He was martyred during World War II for his faith and is recognized by the Church as a defender of Christian marriage and a faithful catechist. His beatification in 1995 spread his sanctity throughout the Pacific region.
Maloyan, an ordained priest from Lebanon, refused to convert to Islam after Turkey’s great persecution of Armenians during World War I. He was executed in 1915 for his faith.
María Carmen, a Venezuelan nun and founder of the Congregation of the Servants of Jesus, will be the first canonized saint from her country. She is credited with the healing of a woman diagnosed with idiopathic triventricular hydrocephalus through her intercession.
