Prince Harry has resigned as patron of Sentebale, the charity he co-founded in 2006 to support communities affected by HIV in Lesotho and Botswana. The move comes after a months-long dispute between the charity’s chair, Sophie Chandauka, and five board members who have resigned.
The five trustees, including Timothy Boucher and Audrey Kgosidintsi, claimed that they had lost “trust and confidence” in Ms. Chandauka and accused her of wrongdoing. In response, Ms. Chandauka filed a lawsuit to block the board from voting her out, forcing the group to resign. Prince Harry and his co-founder, Prince Seeiso, have resigned in solidarity with the former trustees.
Ms. Chandauka has made allegations against the prince, accusing him of harassment and bullying, while also claiming that some individuals on the board mistreated a woman. However, she maintains a positive relationship with Harry, saying their partnership was “fantastic.” The dispute has left Sentebale’s beneficiaries feeling uncertain about the charity’s future.
The Charity Commission, which regulates charities in England and Wales, is assessing the issues to determine the appropriate regulatory steps. The regulator is examining both sides’ claims of wrongdoing and will decide on the next course of action for Sentebale.
