JetBlue Axes Unprofitable Flights, Cuts Costs

JetBlue Airways is cutting unprofitable flights to stem losses and return to consistent profitability. The carrier will end some Miami flights, redeploy aircraft outfitted with its high-value business class, and tweak Europe service. Additionally, it will stop using planes with Mint business class on Seattle flights in April.

The airline will also cut flights from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Jacksonville, Florida; New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to Austin, Texas; Houston, Texas; and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It will end service to San Jose, California, and reduce its presence at Westchester, N.Y., with the exception of Boston.

JetBlue believes that Miami remains a strong geography for the carrier, but it has been struggling due to competition from legacy carriers like American and Delta. The airline’s CEO, Joanna Geraghty, is focusing on reducing costs and culling unprofitable routes.

The changes come after JetBlue reported better-than-expected revenue and bookings in November and December, sending shares up over 8%. The airline will announce new Europe service next week and reduce its summer-only flights to London’s Gatwick Airport. Affected customers can select alternate flight options or receive a refund if other routes aren’t available.
