Musician and Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor has found a new passion in film scoring. Alongside collaborator Atticus Ross, he has been working on scores for various films, including the recently released “Challengers”. The duo’s score for this tennis-themed film showcases their ability to create an energetic and tense atmosphere with dance music.
Reznor notes that he was initially hesitant about working in film, but found a new approach emerging during his collaboration with director David Fincher on “The Social Network”. He says the experience allowed him to apply their songwriting skills to a different setting, using the script, vision of the director and scene as the lyrics.
Ross agrees, stating that they’ve been fortunate to work with directors who treat them as part of a team. The score for “Challengers” is notable for its focus on personal competition rather than athletic achievement, weaving intricate themes through the film’s narrative.
Reznor and Ross are now taking the inspiration from their film work and funneling it into a new Nine Inch Nails project. They’re eager to be back in the driver’s seat and explore new musical territories.
