Nintendo Switch 2 Launches in June with $449.99 Price Tag

Nintendo has announced that its Switch 2 gaming device will launch on June 5, with a price tag of $449.99 in the US and 49,980 yen ($334) in Japan for a Japanese language system or 69,980 yen for a multi-language version.

The new console features a bigger screen, mouse controls, and a chat function available via a dedicated button on the controller. This marks a premium upgrade to the original Switch, which has sold over 150 million units worldwide since its launch in March 2017.

Games announced for the Switch 2 include “Mario Kart World”, performance-boosted versions of “Zelda” games, and classic GameCube titles for subscribers to Nintendo Online. The company’s shares fell 3% following the announcement, with some analysts citing a smooth transition to the new device due to upgraded hardware but maintaining close form and function to its predecessor.

Industry experts expect the Switch 2 to ride on the success of subscription-based services and backwards compatibility, similar to Sony’s PS4 to PS5 transition. Analysts also suggest that Nintendo has already outperformed the market, making it uncertain whether the new hardware will justify its current share price.
