The Texas health department announced 422 measles cases as of Tuesday, marking a significant increase from the previous count of 400 on March 28. This rise is part of the US’s largest outbreak of measles in over a decade.
Specifically, Gaines County reported 280 new cases, up from 270 on Friday. New Mexico also saw four additional cases bring its total to 48, with most reported in Lea County adjacent to Gaines County. Oklahoma added one more case, bringing its total to 10.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported a nationwide count of 483 confirmed measles cases as of March 27, exceeding last year’s tally of 285. Experts warn that low vaccination rates make the population susceptible to measles, predicting further spread in the coming weeks.
Measles cases have been reported in 20 US jurisdictions this year, including Alaska, California, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York City, New York State, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, and Washington.
