NASA’s Gateway space station is taking shape with the arrival of its first habitation module, HALO (Habitation and Logistics Outpost), on American soil. The structure, built with international partners, will provide a base for astronauts to live, work, and conduct scientific research near the Moon. Once completed, Gateway will support NASA’s Artemis campaign to return humans to the Moon and pave the way for future missions to Mars.
The HALO module, one of two foundational elements of Gateway, arrived in Arizona on April 1 after a transatlantic journey from Italy. It will undergo final outfitting at Northrop Grumman’s integration and test facility before being integrated with Gateway’s Power and Propulsion Element at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Gateway’s HALO module will offer command and control, data handling, energy storage, and communications capabilities, as well as docking ports for visiting vehicles like the Orion spacecraft. The module will also support internal and external science payloads, enabling research and technology demonstrations in deep space.
The completed Gateway will serve as a platform for sustained Moon exploration, international collaboration, and technology development, ultimately supporting future human missions to Mars. With HALO’s arrival, NASA is one step closer to launching its ambitious Artemis program.
