Nintendo has announced that a special “Multi-Language” version of the upcoming Switch 2 console will be released exclusively online in Japan, priced at 49,980 yen ($339 USD). This version is Japanese language only and supports only Japanese games.
The decision may seem counterintuitive, given that the original Switch was region-free. However, Nintendo has provided an explanation: the Multi-Language system is available only in Japan, with restrictions on Nintendo Accounts and game stores. In contrast, the base model of the Switch 2 will be sold internationally, but at a higher price point.
This move appears to be aimed at countering scalpers who are profiting from the original Switch’s region-free nature. By locking out cheaper Japanese versions, Nintendo may be attempting to restrict international sales and maintain control over prices. The Multi-Language Switch 2 is also priced similarly to the PlayStation 5 in Japan.
Interestingly, winners of a lottery system will be able to purchase this exclusive console starting on June 5, with announcements made on April 24.
